Most of us have heard this phrase, We are the ones! either sung or spoken by great leaders, singers and others. I read a rendition of this quote by TD Jakes, “We are the people that we have been waiting for and no one else is coming.” I am struck deeply by this clear statement of truth, because I feel like many of us are waiting for someone else or some philosophy or ideology to save us. However, what I know is that we are the ones, the only ones that can save ourselves from whatever it is we feel we need saving.
Perhaps it is our feelings of guilt or grief or loneliness. Perhaps we want to be saved from financial catastrophe or from some health issue. Perhaps we want the world to be at peace. We reach out for saving, but what I know is that we are the only people we have been waiting for and no one else is coming.
Of course, others can assist us in the different predicaments we find ourselves in. Of course, there are specialists to offer their opinion or even give us some kind of remedy. However, what I have witnessed and experienced is that it all comes down to us in the end. As Dr. Ernest Holmes wrote, Founder of Religious Science, author and mystic wrote, “No one can live our life for us.”
So, what is the answer? How do we help ourselves? You know what I’m going to say; it’s what I always say. We must find that Source within and commune with it. We must allow it to love and heal through us as us. Ernest Holmes gives a few good ideas for us on page 446 of the Science of Mind.
He writes, “But how are we to regain the lost Paradise? Only through soul culture and by careful self-analysis. What is my viewpoint of life? This is a question each should ask himself. What do I feel my relationship to the great Whole to be? What do I believe about the Cause back of all? From where comes discouragement, fear, doubt and calamity? They cannot proceed from the eternal Source – that perfect fount of life – the inexhaustible one. Therefore, they must come from my own consciousness.”
We know now that everything is consciousness and consciousness can be changed. Those who have experienced deep meditation and deep prayer know this is true. However, we are the only ones that can change our own consciousness. We are the only ones that can create a new us. We are the only ones that can decide how we want to live and what we want to give to life. The Universe stands waiting for us, not the other way around. We are the ones. The Universe, God, Source can only give us what we can imagine and accept.
We are the people we’ve been waiting for and we can change everything, including this road to the sixth extinction that everyone is talking about by beginning in one place – with ourselves. As we bring our consciousness to a higher level, we have the greatest gift to give to this world – our highest and best self, freed from all the turmoil of thought that we’ve been swimming in for so long. No one brought these thoughts of turmoil upon us. We are the thinker, the observer and the one that gets to decide what we want to think and how we want to act. We are not puppets pulled by the strings of the government, other people or whatever the latest fad is.
We are the ones and the sooner we accept this and live this, the sooner we will have that peace we so desperately seek. If you are already there, then you know what I am talking about. It is a daily practice and the hardest thing about it is making the time for yourself to do it.
Love and Aloha,
Rev. Rita
