What is the definition of free falling and how does it relate to me and spirituality? According to the dictionary definition, it is an occasion when something or someone falls quickly under the influence of gravity or a fast fall from a great height under the influence of gravity.
I recognize my life to be one of free falling. I am constantly letting go into a new experience. When I was younger, I didn’t necessarily have a good foundation and I made some hard falls, finding myself in many precarious situations. However, as my spiritual foundation became stronger and stronger, my ability to free fall expanded. Am I always free falling? No, but when those times come that I am in a situation when free falling is the only thing I can do to move forward in my life, I have to know that I am ready. As the quote says “Faith is taking the first step even when we can’t see the whole staircase.” I have to know that the parachute called Spirit is falling with me and will catch me all the way. I will defy gravity.
I remember many times in my life when I have free fallen. One particular time was when I had my first baby. I remember preparing for that moment, but I really couldn’t prepare until it actually happened. When my water broke and I went into labor it was a free fall, moment by moment by moment with faith alone.
Another time, I remember free falling, was when I sat on an examination table waiting for a doctor to come in and give me the results of a test that might have been good news or bad news. I knew, as I waited in that time of free falling, that everything would be okay, no matter what the news. I had what it takes to walk through anything.
Doing my one-person show was a free fall. Once the lights come up, I had let go and give myself over to Spirit and fall to my final curtain. I think for many of us during these current times, just getting out of bed is a free fall.
I have a formula for free falling that works for me. And, I’ll define free falling as taking that leap to something out of our comfort zone, whether it be deciding to take the journey into oneself with the goal of healing something in our life, or whether it is the beginning of a big endeavor we want to accomplish or whether it is something as simple as a difficult meeting with someone or just getting out of bed in the morning. Perhaps we might even find ourselves free falling because of an event that seems beyond our control.
I ask myself, “Do I have a good foundation or parachute?” Do I fly with the conviction of love and a recognition of who and what I am? If not, then this would be my first place to start my work. All spiritual work starts with the self. We can’t go there thinking we’ll find something different. We are taking whatever is here to there.
The next thing I would ask myself is if I am willing to jump without having all the pieces in place. I can’t know exactly the path the fall will take me, but I can still jump. That takes faith.
And then, as I am falling through the experience, can I continue to replace my fear with faith and just keep falling. If I get scared, I have to stop midair and get back to my foundation, and work on it again.
I must perceive a successful outcome without knowing the details. I must trust and recognize that everything that is showing up on the fall is part of my demonstration even when it doesn’t look that way. A “no” can mean and “yes” and a “yes” can look totally different than what I expected that yes to look like.
It takes a receptive Spirit and one that accepts his or her good to make a successful free fall. Otherwise, we are just falling unconsciously though space or whatever life dolls out to us. In a free fall you fall because you are subject to the gravitational pull downward. I liken gravity to the Law of Cause and Effect. It is exact. Unless, you are supported by your parachute of consciousness, you are free falling with no foundation at all. The Law of Cause and Effect is always in place. With our conscious use of it, we are defying gravity. Do we dare? If not perhaps we should follow Ernest Holmes advice:
“A good demonstration is made when Truth, gathering Its own power, lifts one out of his environment; and until that time comes, he should stay where he is, in order that he may know when he has made a demonstration. …Principle is Absolute, and in so far any individual can actually induce, within consciousness, upon Principle, a definite concrete acceptance of his desire…it will manifest, even though every thought on earth had to change to compel it. If it were a bit of information that was needed for the demonstration that only one person on earth knew – and that person was in the center of Africa – the information would be produced.”
I believe that we all have the ability to demonstrate Truth when we trust Principle. Life is always moving forward in our favor. The more we can build our strong foundation filled with love, self-esteem, self-deserving, compassion, faith and trust, the more our life will become one amazing free fall through experience after experience after experience always on to the greater and greater life, defying gravity all the way.
