What’s Next

As I sit here celebrating the 13th year of ministry on the beautiful island of Kauaʻi, my heart is filled with gratitude—and my mind is filled with questions.

I find myself reflecting on the journey Patrick and I began all those years ago when we boldly declared that we were coming to Kauaʻi to start a spiritual center. Many people had attempted something similar before us. Some doubted we could succeed. Yet we came anyway.

Looking back, I no longer wonder why we succeeded when others did not. That question belongs to the past. What matters is that we had an intention. We believed in it. We acted on it. And the Universe met us there.

I call that a scientific principle because I have come to understand, through both Science of Mind and the discoveries of quantum physics, that our perception of reality influences what unfolds before us. We envisioned a thriving spiritual community where people could awaken to their magnificence through the teachings of the Science of Mind; and little by little, that vision became our lived experience.

Now another question has quietly entered my life: What’s next? Not because I am looking to escape the present. Rather, because growth has always asked that question of me. No one else can answer it. It doesn’t come from worrying about what might happen or fearing what could change. It comes from listening deeply enough to hear what Life is asking of me now.

Oprah Winfrey once observed that many people struggle to answer a simple question: What do you want?So today, I am asking myself that question.Perhaps you’d like to ask yourself the same question.

When I look back over my life, I see a woman who has lived many lives. I left home, married young, became a mother, earned degrees, trained my voice, performed, wrote plays and screenplays, divorced, found the love of my life, became a practitioner, then a minister, earned a doctorate in Consciousness Studies, and eventually moved to an island I had never imagined calling home to help create a spiritual community.

Those are accomplishments, yes. But more importantly, they are chapters in a much larger hero’s journey. Each one stretched me. Each one asked me to become someone I had never been before. Each one revealed another dimension of who I truly am.

As I reflect on that journey, I remember a moment that stayed with me for many years. When I was younger and had just moved my family into what felt like a beautiful home in the suburbs of Albuquerque, my father came to visit. I was excited to show him every room. If I’m honest, there was still a part of me that longed for his approval. As he looked around, he smiled and in his thick Italian accent said, “This is nice, Rita… but there is always more.”

At the time, those words touched an old wound. I heard them as another reminder that I wasn’t enough—that no matter what I accomplished, it would never be quite enough.

Today, I hear those same words very differently. When I think about my father’s life—his journey from Italy, the hardships he endured, the life he built through perseverance and courage—I no longer hear criticism. I hear an invitation. He was expressing something profoundly human: the Divine urge that forever calls us to grow, to expand, and to discover what is possible.

“There is always more” is no longer a statement of lack. Every accomplishment in my life has been more than enough. “There is always more” is a celebration of possibility. Perhaps that is why, beneath every role I have ever played, I find one enduring purpose: to keep evolving. To keep stepping beyond the edges of my comfort zone. To inspire others by continuing to live an inspired life. To remember, moment by moment, the Divine Presence expressing Itself as me—and then to trust it enough to act.

I do know what I want and what I want has become surprisingly simple. I want to be fully alive. I want to remain vibrant, curious, courageous, and always expanding. And I want my life to remind others that they can do the same. Exactly how that unfolds isn’t something I need to know today. Life has never asked me to have all the answers. It has only asked me to remain available.

Thirteen years ago, Kauaʻi called us, and we joyfully answered that call. Every day since has been a gift beyond anything I could have imagined. Today I find myself asking that same timeless question once again—not because I am leaving this chapter behind, but because I never want to stop growing within it.

Whatever the next expression of my life may be, I know it will arise from the same place that has guided me all along: a willingness to listen, to trust, and to say yes when Life calls.

Perhaps that’s the real question for all of us. Not “Where am I going?” But “Who am I becoming?”

Love and Aloha,

Dr. Rita Andriello-Feren, Author, Co-Spiritual Director CSL Kaua’i
