What is generosity? I believe it is a state of consciousness where one is totally confident in themselves and their gifts. They understand that those gifts, when given freely, are inevitably replenished. When I write, for example, I do not worry that someone else is writing the same thing I am writing. I understand there are infinite ideas unique to each of us because we are unique. Two people could never write the same story, or the same piece of prose, even when it is the same topic. There are infinite ideas flowing through everything.
We live and breathe as an infinite universe that is continually giving of itself. Can you count the grains of sand on a beach? Can you limit the waves in the ocean? How about the number of leaves or trees?
Generosity also reminds me of tithing. This week, the great Edwene Gaines left this planet. She was one of the most influential people in my life in regard to prosperity. She taught me about tithing 10% of my income no matter what my circumstances. She taught me that we do not tithe to get something back. We tithe because we can, and when we do, we are shouting to the Universe that we always have enough.
I remember Ralph Waldo Emerson writing, “Beware of too much good staying in your hand.” Stop grabbing and holding on and allow your hands to be open and free to give and receive.
What about generosity in regard to love? Edwene said something powerful about this in the forgiveness chapter of The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity. Every night before going to sleep, ask yourself if you have locked anyone out of your heart today. This is a question that will allow us to let go of grudges, hurt feelings, and judgments. So many times, I can feel hurt by what someone said, or angry when someone leaves this center and I don’t understand why. These feelings do me no good and do not prosper me. I can just let go with love and forgiveness — not just for what I think they did, but for myself for being judgmental.
Generosity is truly our God nature. In New Thought, we believe there is an unlimited potentiality in the universe. We call it Spirit. We call it the Absolute. We call it the Quantum. We call it God, though people tend to move away from that word because of past programming. Whatever we call it, it is infinite and it is self-existent. That means that it is sufficient within itself. It is constantly creating from its infinite self. In the Science of Mind teaching, we believe that we are the microcosm of that macrocosm. What is true for Spirit is true for us. Through the power of our thought, we direct this energy and create the experience of our life. If we truly believed this, we would follow our intuition and trust that the answers, the solutions, and all that we need are right there in our dreams and aspirations. This would be experiencing the generosity of the Spirit living through and as us.
Generosity is also present in our health. I am re-acquainting myself with the father of New Thought, Phineas Quimby. He and the other forefathers and foremothers of New Thought believed in the generosity of Spirit in the area of health. To them, disease, although real in an earthly sense, was an illusion in a spiritual sense. Think about it. Why would an infinite creative intelligence create disease? It doesn’t make sense. Life is life, and that means it is LIFE. Life flows and continues to flow no matter what. Even a tree that becomes diseased doesn’t truly die. It leaves its remains to feed the earth and replenish it. Life continues.
Phineas healed thousands in the mid-1800s by breaking down their beliefs in disease, self-condemnation, and punishment. He called it the Science of Health and Happiness, and it stood in opposition to the judgmental religions and archaic methods of medicine of the time. He was able to tap into a person’s consciousness and move them from the belief that was destroying their body to the one that gave life.
Another area of generosity is creativity. We are all creative, whether we are creating a garden, the perfect mathematical equation, or a masterpiece of art. We are all artists of life. Ernest Holmes once wrote that love is “the self-givingness of the Spirit through the desire of Life to express Itself in terms of creation.” There is that same impulse within each of us to create our lives through our relationships, our life’s work, and our inner desire for expression in all forms.
I believe, and have witnessed, that when the generosity of creativity is shut down, we tend to become depressed or sometimes sick. Or sometimes it flows in another direction that might be destructive. In essence, the generosity of creativity can’t be stopped. It will out itself one way or another.
So, in conclusion, I invite us all to tap into our infinite Spirit and let it move through us. One might ask: how? I only know one way. Let go, surrender to it, and allow It to live through you. Let yourself fly. I’m doing that right now. If I stay present in the generosity of the Spirit through and as Rita, right here and now, without catapulting myself into the future — if I step out of the way of outcomes and just breathe into life — not only am I filled with more joy, I become more receptive to the energy flowing back to me in magnificent ways through the people I know, the projects I am inspired to create, and the life I live.
Love & Aloha,
