“God is always God. No matter what our emotional storm, or what our objective situation may be, there is always something hidden in the inner being that has never been violated.” — Ernest Holmes
This quote by Ernest Holmes, Founder of the Religious Science movement, was written in the early 20th century. He was emerging from traditional Christianity, and through study and deep introspection, came to realize that God was not something outside of us. God is an inner presence. We are all individualized expressions of God.
Today, this quote carries an even deeper meaning for me. Through study and contemplation, I have come to know that the God Dr. Holmes speaks of is what science calls the Quantum Field—the Source, the Ground Zero point of all creation. And yes, it remains unviolated, no matter what we envision or project upon it. We are the quantum field. We live as vibration and frequency, particle and wave.
And yet, there is more. To think only of energy, waves, and particles may seem cold or impersonal. But the Field responds to feeling—and that is where we come in. We are both entangled and universal at the subatomic level, but also deeply personal. Our heart is that hidden place that has never been violated. No matter the outer storm, it anchors our humanness, our ability to love and our capacity to feel.
The Field mirrors back those feelings. Because it is impersonal, no matter what has occurred, we can shift it. How? By choosing where to place our focus. If we first acknowledge our responsibility for what shows up in our lives—without blame—and then direct our attention to what we want to experience, we can change things. Through meditation, self-love, and resting in our heart space, comfort comes, change comes. In that space, untouched by past experiences, lies the opening for new creation.
Rumi expressed it beautifully:
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase each other, doesn’t make any sense.”
This is the place Ernest Holmes called God. This is the place that is our true home.
