The Heart of the Matter

I’ve been picking up older New Thought books lately and digesting how we have progressed forward from the original teachings of our New Thought forefathers and mothers. I am always so inspired by how they knew intuitively what science is now beginning to describe in new language.

Because I am working on the Prosperity leg of the Consciousness Table in my own life, I came upon a book by Charles Fillmore, the co-founder of the Unity Movement. The book is simply called Prosperity.

Fillmore begins by discussing what he and those of his time called “ether,” or the invisible field. He writes that the universe is not made up of solid matter, but of space.

In my early study of Science of Mind and Ernest Holmes’s metaphysical chart, Holmes placed “space” at the bottom of the chart as manifestation — the form that Spirit takes. Perhaps that made sense in his time; but today, we understand that space is not empty. Space is alive with energy, potential, and intelligence.

So when I say “the quantum field,” I’m not talking about the end of the process — I’m talking about the womb of creation itself. It belongs not only at the bottom of the chart, but near the top — alongside choice, volition, and Source — because it is the living medium through which reality becomes form. Quantum science invites us to update the legend of Ernest Holmes’s map describing creation.

Charles Fillmore wrote about “ether” as an invisible substance behind all visible form, charged with energy and intelligence. He didn’t have the language of quantum physics, but he was pointing to the same mystery: that reality is not made of solid things, but of living energy and potential.

Today, science tells us that matter itself arises from invisible fields. Nothing is truly solid. Everything is pattern, vibration, and relationship. What we call “matter” is actually fluctuations in invisible fields — energy organized into patterns.

I’ve been sitting with this all day. I took it with me on my walk by the ocean. I felt as if I was vibrating at a whole new level of awareness. As I looked out at my world, I began to perceive everything as energy and space appearing as form — and myself as part of that same field of life. It was almost overwhelming and most definitely took my breath away in awe.

So thanks to science, the question for us is no longer whether the field exists — the question is: How do we live in conscious relationship with it? Fillmore states that it is limitless, but we limit it. I know I limit it. Do you?

The old teaching that “thoughts are things” is no longer just a poetic New Thought idea. Our inner state shapes how we perceive, respond to, and participate in the world.

And I know what you may be asking:
What about the world? What about all the violence and all the “bad” people out there? What good does it do for me to know this?

It means more than I can fully articulate in this moment. If reality is relational and interconnected at its deepest levels, then what I feel, what I embody, and how I choose to move in the world matters. I cannot control the field — but I participate in it.

We are engaging this field all the time, but not always consciously or skillfully. When I look at what is happening in our world today — the polarization, the fear, the suffering — I cannot turn away from the conditions that are manifesting. But neither can I afford to add more fear, hatred, or reactivity to the field.

I must do my part to utilize my individualization within this field in higher and more loving ways of embodiment.

For me, embodying the Field means:

1. Living aware that I am not separate from life

2. Regulating my inner state — heart, breath, and nervous system

3. Not waiting for life to happen to me, but consciously cooperating with it

There is one seamless Reality appearing as awareness, energy, and form — and the heart is where we feel that oneness. I believe the heart is the access point. When we live from the heart — from coherence, truth, presence, and love — we align ourselves with the deeper intelligence of life itself.

The heart is not sentimental. The heart is magnetic. The heart is creative. The heart is how we participate in the unfolding of form from the field of possibility.

So when people ask, “What about the violence in the world? What about the cruelty, the hatred, the suffering?” This teaching does not deny any of that. It does not excuse it.

It simply says:

· I am not separate from the field in which all of this is arising.

· I cannot control the world — but I can choose the quality of consciousness I bring into it.

· I can choose not to become another carrier of fear.

· I can choose not to let hatred move through me.

· I can choose to become a small pocket of coherence, compassion, and clarity in a chaotic field.

That may not change the whole world today, but it changes the part of the world that moves through me. I may not be responsible for all the darkness in the world, but I am responsible for how much darkness I allow to move through me.

Ernest Holmes wrote often about the limitlessness of Spirit and our nature as individualized expressions within the Whole. We cannot diminish Infinite Life — we can only limit it within our own awareness and expression. The field of possibility is inexhaustible. We can never use it up. But the more we expand our thoughts, feelings, and actions toward a greater vision for the world — and if enough of us do this together — I do believe a tipping point is possible.

Things may feel dark right now. We are being encouraged on many fronts to lose faith, to separate from one another, and to isolate. I believe we are being called to do just the opposite.

· Join with others of like heart.

· Be an inspiration through your way of being, not by telling people what to think —
but by walking in the world as love in action.

Compassion lived out loud changes fields. When systems feel unstable, when trust feels fragile, and when the volume of fear is turned up everywhere we look, inner coherence becomes an act of service.
