Who’s Thinking You?

Rising Beyond the Law of Averages in a Time of Collective Awakening

I had a thought today, and it is this: How much of my mind is original thought, and how much of it is everything I’ve ever heard and experienced? In other words—who’s thinking me?

In the Science of Mind teaching, we understand that we are all immersed in the collective consciousness. Everything that has ever been thought and experienced—and everything that is now being thought and experienced—forms the fabric of this consciousness. We are individualized expressions within the collective. Our individualization is shaped by what we absorb and embrace from the whole.

There is a line in the Science of Mind textbook that tells us that the moment we embrace the limitlessness of the Spirit of Life, we can rise up out of the Law of Averages and create something original as our life.

As I reflect on this, I’m sure this is what happened with people like Martin Luther King Jr., the Wright Brothers, and others who rose beyond the consciousness of their time and brought something new into the world from the limitlessness of the quantum field. And yet, when I think more deeply about it, the ideas of flight or freedom for all people weren’t actually “new.” They were Divine ideas—waiting for a willing channel to bring them into manifestation.

So where am I going with all of this? I’m asking myself—and you—a question:
Can we rise up out of the collective consciousness that has brought us to this time of political upheaval, social division, and global unrest, and bring forth what is pressing to be expressed individually through us? Can we lift our own individualization beyond the Law of Averages and live as the unlimited beings we truly are?

If you’re unfamiliar with the Law of Averages, in the Science of Mind teaching it simply refers to the tendency of life to repeat patterns based on what has come before and what continues to be reinforced through collective belief. It’s the idea that “this is just how it goes”—for example, that a certain percentage of people will get a particular disease, experience lack, or live with limitation.

But we are more than the Law of Averages. For evolution to move toward greater and greater expression through us, we must think new thoughts and take action from those thoughts. We must dig deep within ourselves and ask: What is mine to give? What is mine to express?

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that we are inlets for the Divine—but we have the choice to become outlets. Infinite Intelligence is always pouring into us, but it is our choice whether we allow it to move through us and out into the world.

I have lived for seven decades on this planet, and I have seen a great deal. I have never experienced what we are witnessing today in terms of the blatant misuse of power and authority unfolding right before our eyes. And yet, when I reflect honestly on history—slavery, the Holocaust, wars, the assassination of leaders—I realize that human cruelty is not new.

The difference today is this: we are awake.

The collective consciousness has intensified to such a degree that it feels as though we received a jolt—a collective wake-up call—shaking us out of a long Rip Van Winkle sleep. What was hidden is now visible. What was tolerated is now being questioned. What was unconscious is becoming conscious.

So here is the invitation I am sitting with:

Stay awake.
Rise beyond the Law of Averages.
Allow Divine Mind to move through you in the way that only you can bring it into the world.
