Many years ago, I knew a couple who had very spiritual relationship. They worked side-by-side and were on the path together. I watched them and thought, I want that with my husband. I was married and had been for two decades. I began to work on myself. I went on a spiritual journey, awakening myself to myself.
Many years later, 1996 to be exact, in the most unusual way, I met Patrick Feren. I started studying acting with him and then shortly after, I began working for him. We began to work side-by-side on his projects and we became good friends. On his 40th birthday, I wrote and directed a one-man show for him that we produced together. Our relationship deepened, and, as they say, one thing led to another and we were married on July 1, 2001.
As I walked down the aisle, I was shaking like a leaf. My dream was coming true. The song was “An Affair to Remember” from the movie by the same name. Whenever I hear the song, I always stop on that line, “…a page was torn out of time and space.” That is the way I felt about my life at that point. If you followed my life lifeline you would have seen me moving in one direction, and then upon meeting Patrick, it took a most unusual, unexpected turn.
Our vows to each other were that we would promise each other “to change.” We would not stay the same. This is the most truest thing about our relationship. We continue to grow and change.
We’ve gone through trials, joys, a million projects – successful and not so successful, money crises, health crises, a spiritual journey to ministry, and so much more. When we look at each other, we cannot believe the things we’ve been through. It was far from the easy life, and the whole time, we had the best time in our lives.
Today, July 1, 2017, we celebrate our 16th wedding anniversary. I am so grateful to be married to my best friend, my lover, my spiritual and creative partner all rolled into one. I consider us to have an amazing and successful relationship for this reason: We are not wrapped up and tied to each other. Our relationship is about two amazing whole individuals who love each other and are looking out in the same direction. We always knew there was something bigger than just us that we would do together. As always have and we continue to do so.
So here, we are 16 years later, after creating Center for Spiritual Living Kaua’i together. Spirit moves through us in everything we do. Who knows what will be next. This journey continues in love and light. It is not always easy, but it is a “pearl of great price.” I gave away everything for it and continue to live happily ever after.
I believe if we want successful relationships, they begin with the one we have with ourselves. I continue this journey and I support and love my husband on his.
Happy Anniversary, Patrick Feren!
Eternal Love and Aloha,
