Ernest Holmes wrote:

“The Universe is inexhaustible; It is limitless, knows no bounds and has no confines. We are not depending on a reed shaken by the wind, but on the Principle of Life Itself for all that we have or ever shall need. It is not some power, or a great power—it is ALL POWER.”

In the first step of Spiritual Mind Treatment, we are immersing our whole consciousness in Universal Power. The reason we can do this is because we do not have to go anywhere outside of ourselves to access It. We simply recognize this Power as being everywhere present.

When I was a young practitioner, this didn’t come easily at first. I was used to beseeching something outside of myself when I prayed. I found myself begging, wondering where that “sky God” was and how I could reach Him.

But as I began to study New Thought, as I meditated, and as I practiced treatment over and over again, something shifted. I came into an embodiment of this first step.

All I had to do was take a deep breath, close my eyes, and center into my heart space—and suddenly my consciousness was flooded with a loving, palpable Presence.

It was real.

For those who are new to this idea of God or the Universe, I invite you to begin simply. Spend time in nature. If you live in a city, sit with a plant, feel the air, or look up at the sky. These simple acts can begin to open your awareness to this Presence.

I would not go much further in your treatment work until this becomes real to you, because this is the place from which you speak your word—whether for yourself or for another.

Why is this so important?

Spiritual Mind Treatment is a tool for changing consciousness and for consciously engaging the Law of Cause and Effect for a definite purpose. Nothing in our lives can change if we are not aligned with the frequency of this Divine and Powerful Presence.

The Universe is vibrational in nature.

As Albert Einstein reminded us,

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

In spiritual practice, we might say it this way: We cannot transform our lives from the same level of consciousness that created our current experience. We must rise into a new awareness—one that is already aligned with Infinite Power.

We do not treat from the ego mind. We treat from the Power and Presence of the Universe, allowing ourselves to feel and embody that vibration as we speak.

So, I invite you to spend time contemplating this first step of Treatment before moving on.
